PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of defects such as cracks by giving uniform strain to the surface of a work to prevent it from bringing about a dead metal zone. SOLUTION: A plurality of ridge lines 1 a having a height h stipulated by (1/8)w<=h are formed so as to extend in the same direction at a pitch w restricted by (1/35)b<=w<=(1/5)b on the working surface, when the width of the work 2 before the forging work is b. In the case that the work having a n-angular sectional shape is forged in repeated processes, in the initial process more than n-times, the work is forged so that the intersectional angle of the ridge line 1a shows 40-140 degrees against the same surface of the work 2 by using the anvil 1. It is forged by use of a flat anvil in the processes more than the last n/2 times. In this way, even refractory works can be treated in the free-forging process in a high productivity without causing forging cracks.
