PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the reliability of a braking operation by smoothing a movement of a guide plate, and improve manufacturability and maintainability. SOLUTION: An emergency stop device has the guide plate 14 pressed by a spring 15 between each pair of end plates 17A and 17B. Inside the guide plate 14, a wedge 11 is disposed via transfer rollers 13. When lifted by an operation of a governor operated by an overspeed of lowering of a car, the wedges 11 hold a guide rail 4 in between to provide a braking operation. Although the guide plate 14 is moved, for example, in a widening direction in the process, such a structure of engagement parts between the guide plate 14 and the end plates 17A and 17B as uses rollers 19 smoothes the operation of the guide plate 14 and ensures a trailing movement and thus a trouble-free operation even if the guide rail 4 has a warp.
