The aberrant expression of the Slug gene or of the transcription or expression products thereof can be used to detect the presence of cancerous cells, in particular, tumorous mesenchyme cells, in a biological sample suspected of containing said malign cells. The Slug gene, or the transcription or expression products thereof, can be used in the treatment of cancer.
