PROCESS FOR THE SELECTIVE CONVERSION OF THE ASPHALTENES IN BITUMEN UPGRADING A process is provided for selectively converting the asphaltenic fraction of a bitumen feedstock to lower boiling point distillates. The process involves the utilization of a delaminated pillared clay as the catalyst support. The bitumen feedstock is reacted with hydrogen under hydrocracking conditions in the presence of a metal hydrotreating catalyst on the delaminated pillared clay catalyst support.
