PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively obtain an image reader where a carriage is fixed without fail when the reader is carried and the fixing of the carriage is released without fail when it is started, and to inexpensively obtain an image forming apparatus using the reader. SOLUTION: A fixing member 50 is equipped with a cover 62, and the cover 62 is moved upward so as to put a hand on when the image reader 44 is carried. The cover 62 is provided successively to a leg part 52, and an engaging pawl 66 provided at the leg part 52 is engaged with the upper edge part of a hole to be engaged 34. Thus, the carriage 18 is fixed. Meanwhile, in the case of installing the image reader 44 on a dedicated base 46, a fixing screw 48 passes through a hole part 46A of the base 46 and a hole part 68 of a housing 58, and screwed into a screw hole 54A formed on a fixed piece 54 extended from the leg part 52, and the member 50 is moved downward. Thus, the engaging state of the pawl 66 with the upper edge part of the hole 34 is released. Therefore, the image reader 44 is prevented from being started though the carriage 18 is fixed.
