PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickness adapter for measuring thickness of a multiple adhesive recess pan capable of keeping a thickness accuracy of an optical element simplex after machining the recess for a long time, by reducing abrasion of the thickness adapter used for measuring thickness of the recess pan in grinding and polishing an optical element such as a spherical lens having a spherical surface shape. SOLUTION: In a recess machining, a plurality of optical elements L having a spherical surface shape are adhered to the recess pan 1, and the optical elements L are ground and polished. The thickness adapter 11 of the recess pan used for measuring central thickness of the optical elements L is made of metal or ceramic, or is formed in a two-layer structure of metal and glass and has a circle zone part in its part. Thus, abrasion resistance of the thickness adapter in measuring the thickness can be improved, and the thickness accuracy of the optical element simplex after machining the recess can be kept for a long time.
