PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical character reader, a document classifying method, and a character read system which eliminates a temporary break of character recognition processing due to the fullness of sorted documents in a pocket of a sorter in the character recognition processing, and are free of the loss time of operation due to setting changes of a program and the loss time spent for program modifications and are efficient. SOLUTION: The kinds of documents are decided and according to the result of decisions on the kinds of the documents, the numbers of the documents by the kinds are counted. Then the kinds of the documents discharged to pockets provided on the sorter are allocated according to the count results of the numbers of the documents by the kinds. According to the decision results of the kinds of the documents, the documents are discharged to the corresponding pockets and sorted.
