Race information conversion units at the simulator terminals (22) comprise a unique key for recording the use of the terminal. The contest is a race with a starting position for the virtual competitor or a virtual object and includes at least one real participant or object. A positioning device (2-6) monitors the actual position of the real participant or object being raced against in real time and transmits this information to the simulator via a central server (16) which converts the information into a format suitable for the simulator. A simulator terminal is provided for each virtual participant and include a conversion unit for converting information received from the central server relating to race conditions (e.g. environmental and weather data) into a simulator-suitable form.
