A catalyst element comprising a carrier and, carried thereon, a catalyst layer containing an alkali metal and/or an alkaline earth metal, characterized in that at least one alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal is caused to be present within the carrier and/or between the carrier and the catalyst layer. The catalyst element is capable of preventing the deterioration of the carrier due to the above alkali and the like in the catalyst layer and thus can be used for a prolonged period of time.
