PURPOSE: To provide a character display device which displays italic characters with a high quality. CONSTITUTION: A character display device 1a is provided with a display device 10 having a plurality of pixels 12 and a control part 20 which controls a display device 10, and each a plurality of pixels 12 includes a plurality of sub-pixels 14R, 14G, and 14B arranged in a prescribed direction X. The control part 20 acquired a first bit map representing the fundamental part of a character and subjects the first bit map to prescribed conversion to generate a second bit map representing the fundamental part of an italic character and sets the strength of the color element of at least one specific sub-pixel corresponding to the fundamental part of the italic character to a prescribed value based on the second bit map to display the italic character on the display device. Dots constituting the first bit map correspond to sub-pixels 14R, 14G, and 14B in 1:1, and dots constituting the second bit map correspond to sub-pixels 14R, 14G, and 14B in 1:1.
