Method for internal EGR in multicylinder combustion engines

A first outlet of a first cylinder at the end of an expansion stroke, is opened to generate a pressure wave, which continues through the common exhaust manifold. During the opening process, the second outlet of a second cylinder in the intake stroke or early phase of a compression stroke, is maintained open past the period required for the actual gas exchange. The pressure wave causes exhaust gas to be returned into the second cylinder via the second open outlet.
