In order to reduce memory capacity required by a database, the information units which are to be stored are allocated to intersections of an at least twodimensional raster matrix covering a color area. The information units stored in the raster matrix are allocated individual color values. The image matrix thus formed is preferably stored as a database or as part of a database after image compression has occurred. The inventive method enables the required memory capacity of certain databases to be reduced by a factor of 100 or more. The invention is particularly suitable to deal with large amounts of data and to reduce high transmission costs resulting therefrom.
