Use of an aminoalcohol derivative with a urea functional group as a hydrating agent in a cosmetic or dermatological skin care composition. Use of an aminoalcohol derivative with a urea functional group as a hydrating agent in a cosmetic or dermatological skin care composition is new. The aminoalcohol derivative is of Formula (I). R1-NH-C(=O)-NR2R3 (I) R1 = (un)saturated 8-22C alkyl; R2 = H or 1-6C saturated alkyl; and R3 = 1-10C monohydroxylated or polyhydroxylated saturated alkyl. An Independent claim is also included for a cosmetic or dermatological composition containing 0.001-15 wt.% (I), excluding the compound N-methyl-N-(2,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxy-n-hexyl)-N'-n-octyl-urea.
