PURPOSE: A channel assignment and release method for a handoff service in a CDMA cellular mobile communication system is provided to increase a channel usage efficiency, and to minimize a new call cutoff rate by suppressing an unnecessary handoff according to a movement direction of a mobile station. CONSTITUTION: When the number of a use enable channel is bigger than r, a service about a handoff is preformed unconditionally(303). When the number of the use enable channel is smaller than r, it is decided whether a variation rate of a signal strength is positive or negative or not(304). If the variation rate of the signal strength is negative, a handoff call is ignored(305), and if the variation rate of the signal strength is positive, it is whether the use enable channel is existed or not(306). If the use enable channel is existed, the service about the handoff is preformed(303). If the use enable channel is not existed, the handoff call is stood by at a cue(307). A base station checks the variation rate of the signal strength of a mobile station in a standby state. The base station checks a direction of the mobile station on the basis of the variation rate of the signal strength. If the mobile station withdraws, the base station deletes the mobile at the cue.
