PURPOSE: Provided are a system, method and apparatus for sterilizing bottles by introducing a sterilizing agent in the form of discrete atomized liquid droplets onto the bottle's surfaces. Thereby, the amount of sterilizing agent required is reduced and the need for post-bottling pasteurization is eliminated. CONSTITUTION: The system for sterilizing bottles, the bottles(10) having an interior and exterior surface, includes a source of a liquid sterilizing agent; part for introducing the sterilizing agent onto the surface of the bottle in the form of discrete atomized liquid particles by contacting the bottle surface with the particles to form at least a thin liquid film thereon, present in sufficient concentration to substantially eliminate microbial contamination on the surface of the bottle after being in contact with the liquid film for a sufficient period of time; and part for substantially removing the sterilizing agent from the bottle surface after the bottle is sufficiently sterile.
