PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has an absorption polarizing plate disposed in the front side of a liquid crystal element and has reflection polarizing plate in the back side, which can display both of reflection display using external light and transmission display using illumination light from the light source and which can produce preferable contrast both for the reflection display and transmission display. SOLUTION: The absorption polarizing plate 10 and the reflection polarizing plate 11 are disposed in the front and back sides of a liquid crystal element 1, respectively. A light source element 14 consisting of a surface light source 15, a light diffracting means 16 which diffracts the light emitting from the surface light source 15 and allows the light to exit in an inclined direction from the normal line of the front face of the surface light source 15, a light guide means 19 which diffracts the light exiting from the light diffracting means 16 and allows the light to exit from a plurality of beam exiting faces 20a in the direction with a smaller angle from the normal line of the front face of the surface light source 15, and a light absorbing layer 21 formed all over the front face of the light guide means 19 between a plurality of beam exiting faces 20a is disposed with the front face of the light source 15 nearly parallel to the front face of the liquid crystal element 1. |
