PURPOSE: An apparatus for determining a code number indicating height of a pin in a key box and a method for controlling the same are provided to copy a key without disassembling a key box by determining and displaying each pin. CONSTITUTION: A reading key(10) includes an insertion portion(11) having thickness corresponding to height(P2) of a pin. A multitude of contact terminal(a to g) is formed in the insertion portion(11). A connection terminal(13) is formed in a handle portion of one side of the reading key(10). A connector is connected with the connection terminal(13) of the reading key(10). An input portion receives a contact signal between the contact terminals(a to g) and a pin. A reading portion detects a number of the pin contacted with the contact terminals(a to g) by reading a signal of the input portion. A key portion is formed by a multitude of function key. The read key number is stored in a memory. A control portion controls a displaying operation, a reading operation, a storing operation, and an updating operation. A display portion displays information about the height of the pin.
