PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head capable of reducing the width of a gap layer small in a track width direction, and achieving a narrow track, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The thin-film magnetic head is provided with a lower core layer 2, a gap layer 6 on a lower magnetic pole layer 5 formed on the lower core layer 2, an upper magnetic pole layer 7 formed on the gap layer 6, an upper core layer 12 formed on the upper magnetic pole layer 7, and a Gd deciding layer 4 for deciding the height-direction depth of a joined carrier surface between the gap layer 6 and the upper magnetic pole layer 7. Within the width of the gap layer 6 in the track width direction when seen from a medium opposite surface, a part equal to/lower than the width of the upper magnetic pole layer 7 in the track width direction is provided.
