PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate unnecessary movements of a drive means for performing reread in a short time by setting a reread start position to a prescribed position which is closer to a designated picture area in the case of restart of reread operation. SOLUTION: The data fetching state of an external device such as a personal computer 200 connected to a microfilm reader 100 is monitored; and if the data fetching speed of the external device is lower than the image data sending speed, scanning is interrupted, and a scan unit is returned to the home position or is returned to a position other than the home position in the case that an image area has been designated, and scanning is performed again from the start not only, to eliminate acceleration/deceleration of movement of the scan unit but also to move the scan unit at a fixed speed, and as the result, an image without distortion can be obtained.
