The unit (2) has a compact fluorescent lamp (12) connected to an electrical supply terminal (10) fed by a supply cable (7). The lamp (12) and terminal (10) are sealed in an enclosure (1) which has an inlet hole for the supply cable. The enclosure (1) is formed from a reflector (2) with a diffuser (5) both of which are sealed a support (9) fixed inside the enclosure between the reflector and diffuser supports the tube (2) and terminal (10). The diffuser has a hammered effect to permit homogeneous light diffusion. Fixed to the enclosure is a light deflector (14) which spreads the light from the source (12). The geometry of the enclosure is optimized for the shape of the fluorescent lamp.
