PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium on which a finer mark having <=0.1μm size can be stably recorded. SOLUTION: The magneto-optical recording medium 10 comprises a first magnetic layer 3 wherein domain wall displacement occurs by the temperature gradient generated by laser beam irradiation, a third magnetic layer 5 having coercive force enough for a recording mark (magnetic domain) to stably exist at room temperature and an easily magnetized axis in the direction vertical to a film surface where recording is performed by heat generated by the laser beam irradiation and an external magnetic field, a second magnetic layer 4 for controlling exchange interaction (exchange coupling force) between the first and the third magnetic layers 3 and 5. The third magnetic layer 5 is constituted of a multi-layered film (so-called artificial lattice film) periodically composed of a heavy rare earth metal and an iron-group metal.
