PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower heat resistant temperature of a luminous flux controlling means which lowers irregularities of brightness and color which are caused by the eclipse at the lens edge of projection lens and to reduce the lowering of contrast due to stray light. SOLUTION: This projection type display device is provided with a light source, a liquid crystal panel, an integrator which uniformly illuminates the liquid crystal panel comprising a first lens array and a second lens array, a projection lens which enlarges and projects a light modulation picture from the liquid crystal panel on a screen and the luminous flux controlling means which controls the luminous flux which is made incident to the integrator from the light source in between the light source and integrator. Therein, the incident luminous flux from the peripheral part of a reflection mirror of the light source among the incident luminous flux from the light source to the integrator is shielded by a luminous flux controlling means.
