The invention relates to a method for processing output or base signals (S), particularly intermediate frequency output or base signals from at least one device, particularly at least one radar device for determining a distance (d), particularly a small distance of approximately 0 7 meters, of an object through which distance information distance relating to the at least one object can be obtained from the raw, i.e. output or base signals, said object being located in the detection or sensing range of the device. The inventive method comprises the following steps: a) adaptive determination of the background signal (S0) by locally located filters of the output or base signals (S) by means of at least one locally located filter having a definite width (B); b) correction of the background signal of the output or base signals (S); b.1) by subtracting the determined background signal (S0) from the output or base signal (S) and b.2) forming a signal, particularly, for example (s=abs(S-S0)) corresponding to the difference (S-S0) on the basis of the output or base signal (S) and the background signal (S0); c) lowpass filtering, particularly temporal lowpass filters, of the total signal (s); d) forming a correlation signal (k = korr(s)) by correlating, particularly folds of the lowpass filtered total signal (s) with at least one reference maximum that has a half-value breadth; and determining the at least one object maximum (M) by means of at least one locally variable adaptive threshold value (t) which can be determined from the correlation signal (k).
