<p>A process for producing bisphenol A which comprises using a cation-exchange resin as a catalyst and a free mercaptan as a promotor to condense phenol with acetone, wherein the phenol and acetone are fed to a multistage reactor comprising at least two fixed-bed adiabatic reaction vessels packed with the cation-exchange resin and arranged in series and a heat exchanger disposed at the inlet to each reaction vessel and the temperature inside each reaction vessel is regulated so as to be below 90°C. By the process, the cation-exchange resin used as a catalyst is inhibited from releasing sulfo groups. Hence, bisphenol A of satisfactory quality can be obtained and a reduction in catalyst amount can be attained.</p> |
