A method for generating an aerosol includes the step of guiding a gas which flows at supersonic velocity and which has input particles suspended therein is such a way that a compression shock occurs. The input particles are broken down into smaller output particles upon crossing the Compression shock. A devices for generating an aerosol is also provided.
