The process is based on switching a switching element (4) between an output mode and an end mode such that with closed switching element a load current (iA) flows through the ohmic-inductive component (1), while with the switching element broken, a freewheeling current (iF) flows through a freewheeling circuit. The variation of the load current change velocity is divided into a first and second sequential switching phase with time dependent operation. In the first phase the switching element assumes an intermediate position, in which the load current change velocity is lower than permitted max., while in the second phase the switching element assumes the end mode.
