The method of bi-functional use of railway routes involves expanding and altering routes and vehicles. Railway routes are provided with a road filling (5) flush with the top surfaces of the rails. There are detectable lateral boundaries (4) on either side of the track. Road vehicles (1) using the track are provided with laterally active contactless distance sensors (2) enabling fully automatic travel. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (1) A steerable road vehicle suitable for traveling on routes with lateral boundaries. (2) An electrified road vehicle suitable for traveling on routes with lateral boundaries.
