PURPOSE: A method for informing the standby state of an automatic switching system is provided to improve the reliability of a service by enabling origination subscriber terminal to recognize the rough standby time. CONSTITUTION: If receiving an incoming call from a subscriber terminal(100), a VMS control part controls an information message storing part to transmit an information message related to automatic exchange function to an exchange through an E1 interface, so that the information message is transmitted to the subscriber terminal(102). The VMS control part determines whether it is possible to set up a calling path to the requested telephone number(104). If possible, the calling path is connected between the subscriber terminal and an automatic switching terminal for performing the calling(106). If impossible, the VMS control part transmits a message reporting the standby to an originating subscriber terminal(108). The VMS control part grasps the standby state of the telephone number for transmitting to the originating subscriber terminal(110,112). It is determined whether the subscriber terminal switches to on-hook state(114). If switches, the calling path of the subscriber terminal is released(116).
