PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a monofunctional, bifunctional or polyfunctional biaryl in the presence of a catalyst that has an inexpensive ligand, is suitable for a large-scale industrial run, and is capable of producing the biaryl in high yield and purity and in high catalytic productivity. SOLUTION: The above biaryl is produced in the presence of a catalyst of a metal complex of the general formula (IV) (M is Ni, Pd or Pt; L is an organophosphorus monodentate ligand PR6R7R8; A to C are each O, S, CH2, C(R9)a(R10)b-, N(R11)c- or Si(R12)d(R13)e-; (a) to e are each 0 or 1; when at least one of (a) to e in any group is 0, A to C may each be part of the cyclic system; x to z are each 0 or 1; and x+y+z=1-3).
