PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring for an internal combustion engine which has high strength so as to be made into a narrow pressure ring, is economically inexpensive, and also has excellent wear resistance and fatigue resistance. SOLUTION: The piston ring is mounted on an internal combustion engine, and is made of steel having a composition containing, by mass, 0.50 to 0.75% C, 0.15 to 0.35% Si, 0.61 to 0.95% Mn, <=0.03% P and <=0.03% S, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. The steel can be applied to a second pressure ring of an internal combustion engine without performing surface treatment thereto.
