The mechanism has a drive member (1) e.g. in the form of an angled arm with one end (1A) moving in a slideway (11) in the door or window leaf (4). Its other end (1B) is equipped with an axle (2) carrying a cam (3) with an aperture (5) forming a cam track for a peg (6) connected to a drive (7). During operation the peg travels along the cam track to produce a controlled angular movement which is transmitted by the axle to the drive member (1) to open or close the door or window leaf or fix it in an intermediate position.
