PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for initial setting of a recording medium capable of searching the top of the recording medium highly accurately and stably regardless of the kind of the recording medium at the time of detecting the tip end of a recording medium using a reflection type optical sensor. SOLUTION: Using a tip end detector 122 comprising a reflection type optical sensor, a detection voltage according to the light receiving amount is detected one time each in the existence of a board paper and in the absence thereof. Since the tip end position of the board paper is detected with the intermediate potential thereof provided thereafter as the detection threshold value of the tip end detector 122. Thereby, the tip end detection can be executed highly accurately and stably. Moreover, since the board paper is set at the initial position with the detected tip end position serving as the reference, setting of the initial position, that is, search of the top can be executed highly accurately and stably regardless of the kind or the thickness of the recording medium.
