PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a strain gauge type displacement gauge never causing the impact to or breakage of the displacement gauge caused by the extension of a test piece by a prescribed value or more. SOLUTION: This displacement gauge comprises two arms 1A and 1B engagingly locked to a displacement body through knife edges 4A and 4B; respective nipping mechanisms provided on the respective tip sides of both the arms 1A and 1B to energize the knife edges 4A and 4B by the elastic force by compression of a spring 13 to hold the respective tips of the arms 1A and 1B by the test piece 5; and a strain gauge 3 for outputting a signal for according to the extension displacement of the test piece 5 by both the arms 1A and 1B. This displacement gauge further comprises a spring releasing mechanism for releasing the spring 13 laid in the compressed state on the basis of the signal in the displacement of the test piece 5 by a prescribed quantity. Accordingly, when the test piece 5 is extended by the prescribed quantity or more, the strain gauge type displacement gauge is automatically removed from the test piece to prevent the breakage of the displacement gauge.
