PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a copolymer latex which causes excellence in the surface intensity and wet intensity of a coated paper, the mechanical stability of a composition for paper coating and the blocking resistance, and to provide a production method of the latex and to obtain a composition for paper coating comprising the latex and a pigment. SOLUTION: The latex is characterized in that, when a monomer of 100 pts.wt. which comprise (a) a conjugated diene monomer of 17.5-62 pts.wt., (b) a vinyl cyanide monomer of 4.5-44 pts.wt., (c) an unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer of 1-8.5 pts.wt. and (d) other copolymerizable vinyl monomer of 5.5-77 pts.wt., is subjected to emulsion polymerization of three steps, in the presence of the latex obtained by emulsion copolymerization of the monomer mixture of 2-15 pts.wt. having a specific mixing ratio at a first step, another monomer mixture of 30-60 pts.wt. having a specific mixing ratio at a second step and further another monomer mixture of 25-68 pts.wt. having a specific mixing ratio at a third step are subjected to the copolymerization, respectively. The production method and the composition are also provided.
