PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a length measuring machine making use of an electro- optical effect of a liquid crystal. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display panel 1 is constructed by disposing a pair of glass substrates 2 opposite to each other with a space left, between them by spacers 3 and filling the space with the liquid crystal 4. ITO films 5 are vapor-deposited on the substrates 2 to form crystal-liquid driving electrodes. A voltage controlled by a control circuit is applied to the electrodes. The voltage is changed by changing the height/width of the waveform of a signal.
