A hollow piston has a cap (34) with a central rod (52) which has a conical end (48). This fits into a corresponding recess (46) in the center of a bore (38) in the piston body (32). An Independent claim is included for the production of the piston in which the conical end is friction welded in the recess and the cap is welded to the end faces (44) of the body.
