A method and apparatus for decreasing power consumption and prolonging the standby battery time when a user does not need to view the display unit in a radio communication apparatus. A distance sensor is used to provide a signal to a distance detector. This signal provides a measure of the distance between the apparatus and objects around the apparatus. When the signal indicates that a surrounding object is very close, for example, when the apparatus is inside the user's pocket and the surrounding object is the inside of the pocket, a control device turns off the display apparatus for the device in order to conserve electrical power. |
