BIPHENYL DERIVATIVES

Biphenyl derivatives represented by the general formula (1) or salts thereof ; and ACAT inhibitors or medicines containing the same as the active ingredien t: (1) [wherein R1~ is C~5-7 alkyl; R2~ is optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbyl or cyclcoalkyl; R3~ is tetrazolyl, -NHCOCF~3, -NHSO~2CF~3, or SO~2NHCONHR4~ (wherein R4~ is optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbyl); and Z is a single bond, C~1-4 alkylene, or SO~2NH-]. The derivatives and the salts have excellent ACAT inhibiting activity and are useful as preventive and/or therapeutic drugs for diseases due to the rise in ACAT activity, e.g. , hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis.
