TERPHENYL DIHALIDE MONOMERS CONTAINING SULFONATE GROUP, AND PROCESS FOR PREPARING THEM

Terphenyl dihalide monomers containing a sulfonate group, and a process for preparing the same monomers are provided to produce the high quality of polymer electrolyte membrane having thermal and chemical stability, low moisture absorption, high hydrogen ion conductivity at low water content and high dimensional stability, so that they are useful for fuel cells or secondary battery. The terphenyl dihalide monomers containing the sulfonate group, represented by the formula(1) are provided, wherein X^1 and X^2 are each independently fluoro(F) or chloro(Cl), and M^1 and M^2 are each independently alkali metal atom. The process for preparing the terphenyl dihalide monomers containing the sulfonate group, represented by the formula(1) comprises the steps of: performing Suzuki cross-coupling of tetrahalobenzene represented by the formula(3) with phenylboronic acid to prepare terphenyl dihalide derivatives represented by the formula(2); and reacting the terphenyl dihalide derivatives represented by the formula(2) with a sulfonate compound selected from strong sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonate(ClSO3H), fuming sulfuric acid(SO3 H2SO4) and fuming sulfuric acid triethylphosphate salt(SO3 TEP) so as to introduce the sulfonate group into the both phenyl rings, wherein Y^1 and Y^2 are each independently bromo(Br) or iodo(I).
