A method for the surface coating of contact lenses, especially silicone contact lenses, with a layer of diamond-like carbon (DLC) involves (a) treatment of the lens surface in a reducing plasma containing a source of carbon and (b) further treatment in an oxidizing, oxygen-containing plasma. An Independent claim is also included for silicone contact lenses coated with a layer of oxidized DLC, especially lenses made by the above method.
