PURPOSE: A method for registering and searching for a telephone number in a portable phone is provided to minimize the input of numeric keys in registering or searching for a telephone number by constructing a database for numbers inputted in common, such as area numbers, provider numbers, etc. CONSTITUTION: If a user selects an abbreviated input mode, sub menus for each information mode are outputted. If the user selects one of the sub menus, information lists for the selected mode are displayed. If one of the information lists is selected by the user, a number or a text corresponding to the selected information list is automatically inserted. If the user inputs another telephone number consecutively, an identical number or text equivalent to the inputted data is automatically inserted.
