PURPOSE: An exhaust system and control method thereof is provided to improve the engine performance, reduce the exhaust gas, and increase the durability of components related to the exhaust by dropping the exhaust pressure and temperature by changing the exhaust method of a combustion gas corresponding to the operation condition of an engine. CONSTITUTION: An exhaust system comprises an exhaust pipe(1) guiding an exhaust gas discharged from an engine, a catalyst converter(2) and a main muffler(3) installed at the middle of the exhaust pipe, a bypass pipe line(5) connecting the front and the rear of the muffler to guide the exhaust gas, a solenoid valve(6) opening the bypass pipe line, sensors(8,9) for temperature and pressure installed at the exhaust pipe to measure the temperature and pressure of the exhaust gas passed through the catalyst converter, and a controller controlling the solenoid valve to be open if the temperature and pressure measured by the sensor reaches the upper value of the predetermined value.
