<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric field electron emitting element whose resistance can be designed and controlled, to be hardly varied by the temperature or the light, that is highly environment-resisting, and further, capable of forming a film at a low temperature using a glass substrate, etc., easily reducing the cost and increasing the area by using a material having a carbon as the main component as a resistance layer. SOLUTION: In the electric field electron emitting element, an emitter wiring layer 2, an insulating layer 4 and a gate electrode 5 are layered one after another on an insulating substrate 1, and an opening part A reaching the emitter wiring layer 2 is formed in the gate electrode 5 and the insulating layer 4. An emitter 6 is formed on the emitter wiring layer 2 inside the opening part so that the emitter 6 is not in contact with the gate electrode 5.
