<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a novel apparatus and a method for managing a packet memory for guaranteeing continuity of a memory space and simultaneously preventing a wasteful use of a memory space when a variable length packet is stored. SOLUTION: The method for managing the packet memory comprises the steps of equally dividing the memory into fixed length sub-clusters, further equally dividing the respective clusters into a plurality of sub-clusters to meet a packet length, classifying the packets into a plurality of groups according to the lengths, and storing the packet belonging to the same group in the sub- cluster of the same clusters. The apparatus 100 for managing the packet memory comprises a packet temporary storage unit for temporarily storing the input packet, a classifier for classifying the stored packets into the group in response to the length, and the packet memory for continuously writing the packet in the prescribed sub-cluster in response to the classified result.</p> |
