The machine has a brewing chamber for holding and brewing coffee powder, a valve (12) between the chamber and a drink outlet with a spring-loaded valve body (21) movable relative to a valve seat and an arrangement for varying the flow rate of coffee drink through the valve. The spring (29) is biased to hold the valve body in the open position and the body is moved in the closing direction against spring bias force by coffee drink under pressure. Independent claims are also included for the following: a valve arrangement for an espresso coffee machine.
