PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a tape floating amount as much as possible even when a tape speed is made high regarding a head for a magnetic tape device. SOLUTION: The head for a magnetic tape device is provided with a plurality of hill parts 1 having equal curvature which are arranged at proper intervals between top parts, and a tape traveling surface 3 having a read/write gap line 2 in each hill part 1. On both sides of the hill part 1 sandwiching the read/write gap line 2, a tape float preventing groove 5 is provided to have a groove width not smaller than the width dimension of a remaining thick part 4 on the read/ write gap line 2, and a depth dimension larger than the groove width dimension.
