The plastic strips(1) have connecting sections(17) to link with correspondingly contored areas(19) on the metal profiles. Self-foaming plastic(21,23) is located on the insulating strip and expands when the plastic is heated above a specific foaming temperature. Independent claims are made for: a) a composite profile comprising two metal profiles linked by one or more insulating strips(1) incorporating self foaming plastic(21,23) between the metal profiles and the insulating strip; b) a process for manufacturing an insulating strip in which the insulating strip and self-foaming plastic are co-extruded as a continuous strip in a multi-component extruder; c) a process for assembling a composite profile in which an insulating strip with foamable plastic is connected to the metal profiles and the complete assembly heated until the plastic foam expands; d) a process for assembling a composite profile in which an insulating strip without foamable plastic is connected to the metal profiles and thin strips of self-foaming plastic are placed between the metal profiles before heating the assembly.
