According to the invention, in a spark ignition or diesel engine the combustion peak pressure, which occurs in the area of the top dead centre of the piston, is collected in an accumulator at moderate pressure level, temporarily stored and fed back when the piston reaches a certain distance from the top dead centre and the pressure in the cylinder falls below the accumulator pressure, in that a vessel with flying piston, held in a rest position in the direction of the cylinder internal chamber by means of a spring or compressible pressure medium with adjustable pressure, forms an accumulator volume due to yielding of the piston when the combustion pressure in the cylinder internal chamber exceeds the adjusted pressure.
