A method for producing hydrogen, wherein a fullerene derivative having a fullerene and a proton(H<+>)-liberating group introduced therein is used as a constituent material of a proton conductor (3), water is fed to an anode (1) in the state of steam or a gas and electrolyzed, the proton (H<+>) formed is transferred to a cathode (2) via the proton conductor (3) and is converted to a hydrogen molecule there; a method for generating electrochemical energy by an oxidation-reduction reaction using hydrogen, wherein a hydrogen molecule is decomposed into protons (H<+>) at the cathode (2), the proton is transferred to the anode (1) via the proton conductor (3) and is converted to water there, to thereby take out electrochemical energy between the cathode (2) and the anode (1). The method allows the production of hydrogen with good efficiency under a low humidity atmosphere without the use of a humidifier or a dehumidifier.
