An air bag assembly (20) for use in a vehicle at a location exterior to the passenger compartment. The air b ag assembly (20) includes an inflator (32, 32') for discharging inflation gas and a gas receiving expansible air bag cushion (30, 130) disposed in fluid communication with the inflator (32, 32') such that upon release of inflatin gas from the inflator (32, 32'), the air bag cushion (30, 130) is deployed across a rregion immediately below the windshield (16) of the vehicle (10) as well as over the lower portion of the windshield (10) and adjacent frame pillar elements (22) surrounding the windshield (16). The extent of coverage over the windshield (16) is such that the vehicle operator retains a degree of visibility over the deployed air bag cushion (30, 130) after deployment has taken place.
